What Tunneling mode is and when to use it

Last updated: 2026-06-28

Tunneling mode is a playback option designed mainly for TVs. It lets the device hardware process the video more directly.

What it’s for

  • Reduces CPU usage on the device during playback.
  • Improves smoothness on some Android TV and Fire TV devices.
  • Helps avoid stutter or overheating on lower-powered hardware.

How to turn it on

  1. Open Settings and go to the Playback section.
  2. Turn Tunneling mode on or off.

Tips

  • Not every TV supports it the same way: if a channel looks bad after enabling it, turn it off and try again.
  • On phones you usually won’t notice a difference; it’s more useful on TVs.
